Breastfeeding Awareness Month
August has been declared “Breastfeeding Awareness Month” by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  As healthcare providers, we recognize the importance of breastfeeding for both the mother and the infant.  The 2007 evidence-based AHRQ Technical Report on Breastfeeding and Maternal and Infant Outcomes in Developed Countries (www.ahrq.gov) clearly identified benefits to the breastfed infant including a decreased incidence of otitis media, diarrhea illness, pneumonia requiring hospitalization, asthma, leukemia and obesity.

On our website MOAAP.ORG you will see a new link which was facilitated by the DHSS. It is, for the first time a text message service for expecting mothers, called text4baby. It has been well received and has taken off faster than expected. Over 500 pregnant women and new moms in Missouri have registered for this free mobile phone service.

There is a lot of excitement in the air with many things happening on the national level as well as on the state level. I would like to take the opportunity to introduce the MOAAP leadership to you in this first Take a Minute segment of 2010. As most of you know we have our annual meeting in November and the new president takes the helm at this meeting. I am still a little intimidated especially taking over from Dr Tom Tryon whose leadership and passion has taken the MOAAP so far. We have an extremely talented and diverse Board of Directors whom I would like to introduce to the membership.

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) food packages are undergoing monumental changes as of October 1, 2009.  Currently, over 50% of the women, infants and children in the United States are eligible for WIC, and the numbers are no different for the state of Missouri.
